Access to Literacy Workshop for Administrators

 March 2, 2010

This workshop is designed for administrators, with backgrounds in general and/or special education, including building principals, special education directors and coordinators, curriculum supervisors, and superintendents of schools who provide educational services for students with: significant learning disabilities; reading delays, visual impairments or blindness; hard of hearing or deafness, early developmental delays; severe disabilities including those who are deaf-blind; dyslexia; and autism spectrum disorders across all grade levels (e.g., early childhood through Grades 12). In order for students who struggle with reading and writing tasks, education teams or student support teams will need to utilize evidence based instructional strategies, such as differentiated instruction, instructional and assistive technology, and program modifications and adaptations that will help improve their students’ literacy skills. The focus of this workshop is to assist administrators in supporting their teachers and related service personnel with evidence based interventions and instructional activities that ultimately will result in increased student performance.

Workshop highlights include, but are not limited to, the following:
•Tier 1, Tier II, and Tier III levels of intervention within the Multi-Tier System of Supports Framework;
•instructional and assistive technological access to reading, spelling, and writing; literacy materials and resources;
•listening skills instruction to improve phonemic awareness, word decoding, reading fluency, and comprehension;
•evidence based interventions that will assist students learning how to spell, write, and read; and
•meaningful professional development activities in teaching literacy interventions, including data collection and analysis.
